I never had to bother with reading lists. I just read a lot, Including Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH, which I still have on my shelves all these years and moves later, along with a couple other books by O’Brien.
Contemporary cartoonists did portray FDR with a cigarette holder and sometimes a top hat, but (as multiply attested here) never a monocle. Also, while he often grinned, it wasn’t the villain grin seen here. Also also, there would be no connection to a penguin.
Still, I did get the reference, though it was well and truly off.
The way to fight this is to focus on your objective as you approach the doorway and close your eyes as you pass through. (I assume there aren’t any stairs or other problem terrain there.) That’s what I’ve seen recommended, anyway.
